What is GRIT?
GRIT is a local youth girls and boys 5v5 flag football league focused on fundamentals, confidence, sportsmanship, and a well-organized game-day experience. We expect players, parents/guardians, coaches/team reps, officials, and spectators to be positive, encouraging, and respectful at all GRIT events.
What are the rules of 5v5 flag football?
GRIT uses a national standard 5v5 ruleset with certain league adoptions and policies. You can view the current rulebook on the 5v5 rules page.
What divisions are offered?
GRIT currently offers both Girls and Boys leagues with the following divisions:
6U (age 5-6), 8U (age 7-8), 10U (age 9-10), 12U (age 11-12), 14U (age 13-14)
Divisions may be combined based on final registration numbers.
Will divisions ever be combined or adjusted?
Yes. Depending on final registration numbers, GRIT may combine divisions or adjust league structure to create a workable and competitive season.
How is division placement determined?
Division placement is based on age, using an August 1 birthdate cutoff.
Can my child play up an age division?
Requests to play up may be considered, but approval will depend on safety, roster needs, and league discretion. Players cannot play down an age division.
Are schedules and divisions final once posted?
Not always. GRIT may adjust schedules, divisions, team counts, and postseason format based on registration numbers, field access, weather, or other operational needs.
What format does the league play?
All divisions play 5v5 flag football in a non-contact format using rules based on a national standardized ruleset, with GRIT league adoptions and clarifications where applicable.
How big is the playing field?
The field is smaller than a full football field and is designed for 5v5 play. GRIT uses a 50-yard playing field plus two 10-yard end zones (70 yards total or, if shorter, the full width of the football/soccer field) and a width of 25 yards, consistent with the standard 5v5 format.
When are games played?
Games are scheduled on Saturdays. Final schedules depend on registration totals, division size, field capacity, and final calendar approvals.
How many games will teams play?
Teams can expect approximately 4–6 regular-season games during the pilot season, plus an end-of-season tournament/playoff event as applicable.
Final game count depends on registration totals, field availability, and season length.
How long are games?
GRIT games use a 20-minute running clock format. Actual total time at the field may be longer when warm-up periods, transitions, halftime/pregame procedures, or brief delays are included.
How often do teams practice?
Teams will be assigned at least one scheduled weeknight practice per week, plus a game-day warm-up/practice block before Saturday games.
Standard practice days are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings. Times will vary.
When will practice schedules and team assignments be released?
Practice schedules, team assignments, and final game schedules will be released after registration closes and final team counts are confirmed.
What if my child has never played before?
That’s completely okay. Beginners are welcome and even encouraged to play. GRIT is designed to help athletes learn the game, build confidence, and improve in a positive, structured environment.
Will everyone get equal playing time?
GRIT’s goal is to create a positive and developmental experience for all athletes. Playing-time expectations may vary depending on team size, game situations, attendance, and coaching decisions.
How are teams formed?
Teams are formed through a combine and draft process. Before the season begins, GRIT will hold a combine day where participants will go through drills and evaluations while coaches observe. After evaluations are complete, GRIT will hold a draft day where coaches will draft players to build their teams.
This process is designed to help create balanced teams and a competitive, organized league experience.
